The term was ... Plant biologists have started to explore the phenome in the study of plant physiology. Phenomics is the study of the phenome and how it is determined, particularly when studied in relation to the set of all genes or all proteins Origin and usage. In simple terms, phenomics is the science of systematically measuring where traits (qualitative and quantitative) interact with their environments. While plant breeding efforts have greatly benefited from advances in genomics, profiling the crop phenome (i.e., the structure and function of plants) associated with allelic variants and environments remains a major technical bottleneck. Plant phenomics research faces a conceptual challenge. However, methodological advances in terms of data acquisition, handling and processing are becoming increasingly important. The worldwide rise in heatwave frequency poses a threat to plant survival and productivity. IPPN aims to provide all relevant information about plant phenotyping. Plant phenomics is the survey of plant growth, performance, and composition. Here, we review the conceptual and technical challenges facing plant phenomics. Phenomics is described as the high-throughput analysis of phenotype through the evaluation of the morphological, physiological, and biochemical traits of an organism and the correlation of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors (Deshmukh et al., 2014). This will enable breeders to develop new agricultural germplasm to support future agricultural production. A plant’s phenotype is how it looks and performs: a plant’s phenotype is a combination of its genotype and the environment it grows in plants with the same genotype can have different phenotypes. Welcome to the Plant Phenomics network - the online home for the global plant phenomics community and anyone interested in the emerging field of phenomics. Thus, phenomics has broad importance in applied and basic biology and is equally relevant to goals as disparate as yield improvement in food and energy crops, environmental remediation using microbes and plants and understanding complex networks that control fundamental life processes. What is phenomics? The term ‘phenomics’ was introduced in 1997 (Schork, 1997) and was defined in analogy to genomics—and the many other ‘omics’ technologies—as the systematic study of phenotypes at an organism-wide scale (Houle et al., 2010).Thus phenomics refers to the characterization of phenotypes via the acquisition of high-dimensional phenotypic data (Houle et al., 2010). To date, researchers have focused on employing and/or developing novel sensors and imaging techniques 8, 9, 10. Plant phenomics offers a suite of new technologies to accelerate progress in understanding gene function and environmental responses. Determining the new marker phenotypes that show reproducible response to heat stress and contribute to heat stress tolerance is becoming a priority. Phenotyping is analysing a plant’s phenotype. Following the huge accomplishments in plant genetics the subsequent challenge is the mapping of large populations for a better understanding of plant phenomics and integrated plant … International Plant Phenotyping Network is an association representing the major plant phenotyping centers.
